Rotary Club of Boroko extends a welcome to "Fa's Angels"
Dr Lautofa Pulotu (Dr Fa) arrived at the Club meeting on 4th June flanked by a team of angels from Australia - midwives who were in Port Moresby to help our medical teams in the maternity ward at Port Moresby General Hospital. The angels also accompanied Dr Fa on the Rotary Club of Boroko's medical caravan trip to Gaba Gaba village, about 60km from Port Moresby. The caravan is sponsored by Ela Motors and other local businesses and Dr Fa and the team delivered free medical treatment to villagers who can't get to Port Moresby

What stars! The Gaba Gaba villagers must have been delighted by the visit...Dr Fa left over K1,000 worth of medicines and other maternity items, AND...Fa's Angels decided to "adopt" the village and continue to provide essential maternity equipment & materials from Australia to improve conditions for expectant and new mothers. Well done Angels! Well done Dr Fa!

Rotary Club of Boroko supports Operation Open Heart...

If you were visiting Port Moresby on Thursday 28th May and called into the Gateway Hotel to find that the Rotary Club of Boroko's weekly meeting had been cancelled, please forgive us! The Fellows decided to cancel the meeting in favour of attending a major fundraising event for the 40+ surgeons and theatre staff who come from Australia to PNG voluntarily to provide free, life-saving surgery to the many children who would not otherwise have access to these operations. The team who were in town for about three weeks performed many open and closed heart operations and desperately needed funds to ensure the project's viability. And raise money we did...

Thanks to the hundreds of supporter's present on the night over K110,000 was raised including a K10,000 contribution for Port Moresby's "Action Governor" Governor Parkop. PNG's Deputy Prime Minister also committed K15m from the national government

Right: Rotary Club of Boroko members were out in force on the night along with families and friends...see anyone you know...?

"Global Roaming" arrives at the Rotary Club of Boroko...
Fellow Bryan Martin (Rotary Club of Tea Tree Gully, South Australia) attended the Club's meeting on 18th June and presented President Brent St. Hill with a "banner" with a difference. The roving wooden plaque was produced by the Rotary Club of Knysna (South Africa) and is presented to a Club to be engraved and passed on to another international visitor. To date the plaque has travelled to the Rotary Clubs of Larnaca (Cyprus), Bromley (England), Karori (New Zealand) and Tea Tree Gully (Australia)

Unfortunately for Bryan he meant to bring the plaque to the previous week's meeting but forgot, a point that was readily noted by Sergeant-at-Arms Bill Crain...thank you Bryan...all fines gratefully accepted!

The plaque reads:

"South African Rotarians are striving to reach out in the spirit of Rotary across the gaps between people of different groups and hope that you will do all that you can to encourage contacts in the many activities in which we Rotarians take part to assist us in promoting goodwill, better human relations and a better life for all. Best wishes from the Knysna Rotary Club" (PO Box 354, Knysna, 6570, South Africa)

Rotary Club of Boroko's (2nd) newest member....
Members at the Club meeting on Thursday 4th June welcomed their 2nd newest member, Brett Lewis. Brett is employed in PNG by AON in an Occupational Health & Safety consulting role and his contribution to the Rotary movement will be another important addition to the services and projects undertaken by the Club.

Welcome Brett...and don't forget the Club's upcoming project held in conjunction with the Department of National Planning & Monitoring: a fund-raising golf day! The Fellows will be expecting a grandstand performance from Brett, a mad keen, dedicated golfer. Watch this space...and talking about the Department of National Planning, take a look at the UPNG Medical Centre official opening article below...

Members at the Club's meeting on Thursday 18th June welcomed their newest member, Steven Siaguru. Steven holds a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Politics & Psychology from Richmond University (UK) and is employed in a logistics management role with a company in Port Moresby. His many talents will be put to very good use in the Club Services team.

Steven was introduced to the Rotary Club of Boroko by fellow Ian Morris who has since moved to Jakarta

UPNG Medical Centre official opening...
University of PNG Medical Centre director Dr Christopher Kinipi had plenty to celebrate on Tuesday 16th June because the renovations and extensions to his beloved medical centre were officially opened. The project worth K60,000 was jointly funded by the Department of National Planning & Monitoring and the Rotary Club of Boroko through a World Population Day golf tournament in 2008. Contractor J D Hayes did the work; Brian Bell donated a TV and DVD; and Grafitti Signs provided the graphics and signage. Rotary Club of Boroko President Brent St. Hill officiated at the opening along with several Club members donning the new Club polo shirt...that's the nice blue one in case you hadn't noticed. Also in attendance were the Department of National Planning leading lights Yasap Popoitai and Christine Aisoli

Rotary Club of Boroko wheelchair donation to NOPS...
The Rotary Club of Boroko in conjunction with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) presented the National Orthotic & Prosthetic Service (NOPS) with a donation of 670 wheelchairs on Thursday 18th June. The hand-over ceremony was hosted by PNG's Secretary of Health Dr Clement Malau and attended by Rotary Club of Boroko President Brent St. Hill - who chose not to wear the Club's lovely new blue polo shirt...the one in the photo above in case you hadn't noticed - and LDS president for PNG and Solomon Islands, Tevita Funaki. NOPS Port Moresby Manager Rajesh Nanda said that 315 wheelchairs would remain in Port Moresby and the remainder was destined for NOPS in Lae

Rotary Club of Boroko's GSE delegate returns home to PNG...
The Club's GSE delegate, Tania Mairi-Mahuru was our guest speaker at our 4th June Club meeting. Tania is seen here presenting a collection of banners from the Clubs she visited in New Zealand including the Rotary Clubs of Kaikohe, Sunrise Whangarei and Takapuna North. Tania expressed her gratitude to the Club for sponsoring her to the GSE Team and to her host families in New Zealand who in typical Kiwi fashion, made Tania feel like she'd known them for years! Well done New Zealand; well done Tania!

Rotary Club of Boroko pays tribute to Past President Sir James Jacobi...
The only man knighted for services to Rugby League has died in Brisbane at the age of 83. Sir James, knighted in 1991 for services to rugby league, was  known ubiquitously as "Jabber Jim" and worked in Papua New Guinea as a general practitioner for about 40 years during which time he became the first president of the PNG Rugby League, a position he held for more than 25 years. He oversaw PNG becoming a member of the International Rugby League Federation where he represented the country. Consequently, PNG began playing regularly against the Australian, New Zealand, English and French teams.

In Port Moresby, his surgery developed into the city's largest practice and treated rugby league players free of charge together with missionaries and many others who would have struggled to pay the fees. Sir James was born in Maryborough, graduated from the University of Queensland and served in the Royal Australian Air Force in PNG in the final stages of World War II.

Jeff Wall, a Brisbane-based consultant recently awarded the CBE by PNG, said, "Jim's enormous range of business, political and community contacts were regularly tapped to help develop the greatest game of all in the only country where its place as the national code, is unchallenged. He was a person of unbounded generosity, and his passion for rugby league - and the time he put into it despite seeing up to 60 patients a day in his medical practice - was inspirational"

Rotary Club of Boroko President Brent St. Hill said, "Sir James' exceptional contribution as President of the Rotary Club of Boroko, to PNG Rugby League, to PNG and the people of PNG is an outstanding and cherished legacy. Sir James will be long remembered by all whose hearts he touched over so many years. May he rest in peace"

Saving Joyce…

ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) proudly boasts another successful mercy mission as 11 year-old Joyce Raymond is flown to Melbourne for life-saving treatment for burns to 40% of her body

In June 2008 Joyce’s grass skirt accidentally caught fire while cooking and she was badly burned from her knees to the middle of her back. On remote Kanakwa Island in Sudest, Milne Bay there are no medical facilities to treat serious burns and under the care of Father Tony Young, Joyce remained at the Nimoa Catholic Mission Station aid post for almost six months and while her dressings were changed regularly, her burns were never going to heal…until Joyce was spotted by philanthropists Doug and Ann Rathbone who were visiting from Melbourne with executives from Doug’s Melbourne-based company, Nufarm

ROMAC became involved in February 2009 and with the aid of the Catholic Bishops Conference organised passports and visas to allow Joyce and her mother Lucia to fly to Melbourne. Travel formalities take time so ROMAC had Joyce transferred to Alotau Hospital where she received essential care and attention in preparation for her journey including suitable clothing and shoes for Melbourne’s brisk and chilly June climate! Notable was the assistance provided by Gari Conn, wife of ROMAC’s PNG director and member of the Rotary Club of Boroko, David Conn

The logistics of moving a critically ill child from Alotau through conventional travel routes were enormous so Joyce’s benefactors decided to take matters into their own hands! Doug Rathbone approached Lorne Cole at Jet City, a privately-owned international air ambulance service based at Essendon Airport, and with cooperation from PNG’s Customs and Immigration authorities, Doug and Lorne arranged and funded a Leah jet to fly to Alotau to collect Joyce and fly her directly to Melbourne. Accompanied by David Conn, a specialist nurse and members of her family, Joyce touched down safely in Melbourne and was met at the airport by Doug and Father Tony who was coincidentally visiting Melbourne to celebrate his mother’s 97th birthday! Also at the airport was Past President Ian Fry from the Rotary Club of Broadmeadows and former member of the Rotary Club of Boroko

Joyce was featured in the June 28th edition of the Sunday Herald Sun and her progress will be monitored by many caring Melbournians. Her treatment, which includes extensive skin grafting, is expected to take up to three months and will be funded by ROMAC

Fellows at the Rotary Club of Boroko wish Joyce all the very best with her treatment and safe return to her family and five sisters on beautiful Kanakwa Island. Get well soon Joyce! We look forward to meeting you at our Thursday evening Club meeting…

Cheshire Homes to benefit from a very courageous walk...
Members of the Rotary Club of Boroko were touched by the gallantry of Patricia Dear who will undertake the walk of her life when she attempts to conquer the treacherous Kokoda Track on 16th July to raise money for Cheshire Homes in Port Moresby. Not only did the Fellows dig deep at the Club Meeting on 9th July and raise K2,000 for Patricia, but Dr Pulotu made an unexpected, generous and well-received donation of medical services for permanent staff of Cheshire homes. Patricia was accompanied by Cheshire Homes workers, Barbara McGrory and Peter Kaipel who also spoke to the fellows about the challenges and achievements of staff and volunteers at Cheshire Homes

Patricia's valour deserves recognition...please assist. Contact Patricia Dear or President Brent St. Hill

The Fellows are looking forward to welcoming Patricia home and to hearing all about her adventures and trials at a Club meeting later in the year...God speed Patricia!

Charity Golf Day a great hit...
The field was packed for the Rotary Club of Port Moresby's annual Golf Day on Friday 3rd July and Rotary Club of Boroko's dynamic "Awesome Foursome" fought a brave fight to the bitter end to finish 14th in a field 123,456 teams...well 30-something anyway. Rumour has it that our "Awesome Foursome" shot a net 59 on a team handicap of 12. Well done team...and you looked great in that new Club polo shirt - the blue one that is...
