Adopt A Village Programme

The generosity of individual clubs across Australia (as well as districts and individuals) in support of RAM’s treated bed net programme has made a huge difference to the lives of so many people.  Nets do save lives and reduce suffering.

See Bednet Photos

Substantial funding has been received from The Rotary Foundation and AusAid, and more recently from the Global Fund aimed at significantly reducing if not eradicating malaria in the Solomon Islands over time.

Recently the Global Fund has announced a substantial malaria funding grant has been approved for Papua New Guinea.  It is anticipated that a significant lead time will be necessary to get the protocols and logistics in place before the delivery of nets is fully operational.  It will be quite some time before any real impact is felt where it matters – at the village level.

As the Global Fund grant extends over five years RAM funding will continue to be used for those villages that would otherwise wait some years before receiving protection.

Therefore, we must keep the RAM Adopt A Village programme going through your continued support and encouragement of all of your clubs to do the same.

Finally, I am planning to set aside in this year’s national RAM Conference a full session to review the effect of the external funding being directed to our region and its impact on the work coordinated by RAM.

AAV contributions from commencement to 31 July 2008

A Record of support for RAM's Adopt A Village initiative to 31 July 2008.

(Many  2007/8 contributions were not received until July 2008)

The records which follow show the generous support provided by clubs, individuals and groups within and beyond the Rotary family towards the efforts of RAM in providing help for those who suffer the ravages of malaria in our neighbouring countries.        Thank you all.

AAV contributions , to 31 July, 2008 , total AUD$683,094.69 from approx. 450 clubs and 35 private individuals, firms, schools, Inner Wheel, Rotaract and Interact. Matching Grants (US$746.500+) & General Donations {$52,746.90} were also contributed.

Numbers in the last column are tracking references. Contributions for the respective years: 2003/4 : l - 34 ($39,353.00); 2004/5: 35 - 160;($153,159.29). 2005/6: 161 - 294, ($159,887.76).2006/7:295-421;($159,988.49). 2007/8:422-574,($170,706.15).

The program operates in PNG and The Solomons. It includes support for bed nets in the Australian Doctors International (ADI) sponsored parts of PNG. Where villages are large or club donations small villages maybe shared by several clubs. RAM in PNG is supervised by PP Ron Seddon, Rotarv Club of Port Moresby and in the Solomons, by PDG Peter Thomas, Rotary Club of Barossa Valley.

RAM has also assisted several Matching Grants (US$300,000+) sponsored by the Rotary Club of Warringah (D. 9680) to provide nets in Timor Leste.

In addition to the clubs shown a number of Districts and clubs have sponsored Matching Grants through The Rotary Foundation. These include D.s 9450, 9500, 9570,9600, 9630, 9640, 9650, 9670, 9680, 9750, 9790, 9800, 9810 together with overseas Districts; 6060, 6810 and 7080. These Grants have been used to 'adopt' large groups of villages to extend the area of protection beyond just one village. These projects have been in the order of US$20,000 - US$30,000 and include approx. 30 + villages. Each club within a District sponsoring Matching Grant will be recognised as 'adopting a village'. Support through Matching Grants totalled US$746,500~

RAM appreciates the generous support provided through Rotary Foundation Grants. In addition to the above, two earlier Matching Grants (US$200,000) and two 3-H Grants for malaria programs in The Solomons have been worth US$745,000.     The family of Rotary works together!

In the summary below a (?) indicates that the name of the village has not yet been allocated but a check should be made on the appropriate web site to bring details up to date. PNG: www.ram.com.pg OR Solomons : www.ramguadalcanal.com.sb
